Have that volunteer spirit? Help out the YWCA and your community

Are you looking for a way to connect with our community? Do you think about how to make Clark County a better place to live? Do you know you want to get involved and help others but don't know where to go or how to start? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the YWCA of Clark County is the organization for you.

Becoming a YWCA of Clark County volunteer is one way to help your community. Volunteers learn how to take action and help people who are in crisis, meet and network with diverse community members, as well as become actively involved in improving the lives of Clark County residents.

This spring, there is a strong need for adult volunteers to:

  • advocate for adult and youth victims of sexual assault.
  • represent the best interest of an abused or neglected child by becoming a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate).

C-TRAN wants to raise prices, set to host open houses to talk about it

C-TRAN is proposing a modest fare increase that, if approved, would take effect Sept. 1, 2010.

Following an earlier board goal to implement small fare increases annually, the proposal could help C-TRAN to modestly off-set declining sales tax revenues by $150,000 during a 12-month period. As proposed, cash fares could see a five-cent increase, and other fares would increase accordingly, based upon the cash fare proposal.

Here's the entire text of Leavitt's speech.

"Good morning friends, honored guests and fellow citizens:

As you know, I grew up in here in Vancouver.

It is very emotional and humbling for me to be standing here before you this morning.

I share your dreams for our community.

I have attended our schools and played in our parks.

And I love Vancouver too much to accept anything less than the best.

We have worked too hard and come too far to go backwards now.

I come before you this morning to report on the State of the City, and to speak both frankly and candidly to the residents of our community, the fine employees of our city, and those at all levels of our government.

I’d like to thank my predecessor, Mayor Royce Pollard, as well as councilmember Pat Jollota for over 20 years of dedicated service to our community.

Now, we enter into a new decade, and for all intents and purposes, with a

Evergreen Public Schools' Transportation Department earns award

School Bus Fleet magazine has named Evergreen Public Schools' Transportation Department as one of its 2010 Great Fleets Across America.

The annual series profiles five outstanding pupil transportation operations around the country and highlights their safety practices, innovative training programs and open lines of communications.

The article on Evergreen mentioned the district's outstanding inspections the last 20 years, including the fact that many of those years, the department has had an out-of-service rate of less than one percent.

Evergreen Public Schools has 240 school buses and transports 16,000 students daily.

The other school districts featured include: Dare County Schools, Nags Head, North Carolina, with 46 buses transporting 1,910 students each day; Garfield School District, Rifle, Colorado, which transports 2,000 students on 43 buses, Hanover Park Regional High School District, East Hanover, New Jersey with 40 buses carrying 3,000 students; and Stumbo Transportation, Ogden, Iowa, which each day transports 350 students on 10 buses.

How do you feel about the city's municipal services? Have your say

The City of Vancouver is launching its biennial community survey to gauge resident satisfaction with municipal services.

The telephone survey is expected to be concluded by the end of the week. A written version of the survey will be available on the city's web site starting March 1 for those who have not been contacted but wish to provide their views.

"This year's survey is especially important because it will measure both the community's satisfaction with essential city services and how much they value those services," said City Manager Pat McDonnell. "If you get a call to participate in the survey, please invest the 10 to 15 minutes needed to share your views. It's important to the future of our city."

The random scientific community telephone survey will be conducted by ETC Institute of Olathe, Kansas. The company, selected through a competitive bid process, also conducted the city's community survey in 2008.

Vancouver has conducted a community survey every two years for the past decade.
